What HESSA does — and how members can get support

HESSA

HESSA exists to support home educated children across New Zealand to participate and compete in student sport. Our work sits in three connected areas.

Advocacy

We are raising awareness of the barriers home educated domestic students face with regional and national sporting organisations, and advocating for system change in secondary-age student sport so that all domestic students can compete.

A national framework for members

HESSA provides policies, processes, and systems that support members to access student sporting opportunities at a local, regional, and national level. One of the key benefits of membership is that we help ensure students meet the eligibility criteria to access student sport.

Practical support for inclusion requests

For many sports, access to secondary-age student sport is controlled by schools and school-based organisations. HESSA can support home educated domestic students to enter School Sport NZ sanctioned events through an inclusion request process. Requests must be received by the 15th of the month, and should be at least 8 weeks before the event applied for.

If you are a HESSA member and would like help with an inclusion request, please contact us.
